Summary Note
|
The high prevalence of dental caries among young children is of public health concern in Brunei. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of parental factors on dental caries status of 5-year-old preschool children. A convenient sample of 321 was selected from a school. Clinical oral examinations were conducted on 263 of them using plane mouth mirrors and light from the school’s dental unit. Dental caries experience (mean dft) and caries free mouth (CFM) were determined. Information on parental socio-economic characteristic and parental intervention (dental visits, oral hygiene and dietary practices) were solicited from the parents using self-administered questionnaires. In conclusion, parental factors do influence the dental caries status of their children. As such, parental support and commitment need to be considered in prevention and promotion activities. It is recommended that a comprehensive preschool oral health programme be implemented with emphasis on high risk children and parents, especially mothers.
